Papaya is a strange fruit, not everyone can appreciate its delicate perfumey flavour and soft melt in the mouth texture. I learned to love it while travelling in Thailand, anytime I had a bad stomach the papaya was there to help. It works in both ways too, as in, if you suffer with constipation the fruit is an amazing digestive aid and if the problem is the opposite, then the seeds offer a natural and very effective yet gentle solution for diarrhea. For those who are not so keen on eating the fruit you can make a delicious juice in a couple of minutes with a blender and a few simple ingredients, which is what i did with the papaya that a friend gave us from their garden the other day. A quick and easy way to incorporate papaya into your diet.
The fruit and seeds of the papaya provide a natural remedy for constipation, diarrhea and parasites.
The flesh of the fruit contains an enzyme called Papain that aids digestion by helping to break down foods. I have used the seeds various times when ever I had cases of “Delhi Belly” while travelling in India and anyone who has travelled there knows that can happen fairly often. The flavour of the seeds is in such contrast to the fruits light, sweet flavour, they are slightly hot and have a peppery-mustardy flavour, not completley unpleasant. I have no expert knowledge or science facts but I know from experience they work. One teaspoon would usually stop the trips to the toilet and not only stop it but it seemed to actually cure the problem altogether. This article “How to Use Papaya Seeds” from Superfood Profiles is very informative on how to use the seeds as a treatment for parasites.
So the recipe I am sharing today is a very simple blend of fresh papaya, lime juice, Piloncillo Syrup and water. It is a refreshing drink on a hot day and if you are having digestive problems it can help ease them too.
You will need a blender.
Ingredients and Method for Perfect Papaya Juice:
1 small-medium papaya
400ml / 1 1/2 cup of water
Splash of piloncillo syrup, ( you can use honey or sugar or even leave it out if you prefer)
Juice of 1/2 to 1 lime
Chop the papaya into chunks and put into the blender along with the water and the piloncillo.
Blend til smooth.
Squeeze in half the lime and taste, add the other half if you can’t taste it at all, it shouldn’t be overpowering but there should be a hint of lime flavour.
Makes around 1- 1.5 litres of juice
Hint: Add a few of cubes of ice while blending if you want it extra cold, perfect for a hot day.
Serve cold and enjoy: Perfect Papaya Juice!
